Heiress

I watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and was amused by all the ways that Greek family life, as portrayed in the movie, is similar to my own Dominican life.  Years later, at a salsa dancing class, I met an amazing man and his daughter who were taking classes together.  The three of us formed a nice friendship that really felt like home.

\nGreeks celebrate life with food and family.  Food is a way of showing love and of connecting with others, a way to practice generosity and most importantly, show skill.  Similarly, who gets to cook which dish is a ranking mechanism among Dominican women.  I imagined a mother or older sister training the young girl in the ways of the family. The young girl is playful but she understands that this is serious business, her own womanhood depends on it.
